Coconut as a crop

Coconut has grown in popularity as consumers and industries discover it’s many benefits.

Coconut trees are cultivated by farms large and small.  Coconut trees can throw a crop every 4 months but do rely heavily on a few months of monsoon rain. The Coconuts are either picked by hand or wait to fall naturally.

Many Indians will drink a ‘tender’ Coconut a day as it provides excellent hydration in the hot season where clean drinking water is hard to find.

The Coconut has many uses and these are shown below;

  1. Tender Coconut for Coconut milk or water.
  2. Fresh and desiccated Coconut used widely in South Indian cooking.
  3. The coir of the Coconut is made into ……..
  4. Fines or dust from the coir is used in gardening or nursery peat.
  5. Shells are used for the distillation of Coconut oil
  6. Coconut GAC

How is Coconut Granular Activated Carbon made

Coconut GAC is made by the dry distillation of twice cooked coconut shells in the absence of air. The shells are a by-product of coconut farming. The shells are charred first on the farms to remove moisture and organics. These are collected and sent to the factory where they are inspected to remove any foreign materials. The shells are then crushed and sieved to a specific size. This material is then charred again for 36 hours in the absence of air at around 800 degrees Celsius. This reduces the moisture down to a maximum of 5% with a minimum hardness of 98%.

After kilning the Coconut GAC is cooled and sieved to remove the dust producing a consistent size with a final carbon content of between 9-11%.
